All About The Man

I'm not quite sure which comes first - "Julian the family man", or "Julian the computer nerd" - I guess you'll have to make up your own mind on that one!

Hideous photo

The Perry family (Melbourne contingent) consists of myself, my good lady wife Winter, and my two stepdaughters Lisa and Katherine (Kate). Outside of Mrs. B (my Mum in law) and adopted Pater and resident shit-stirrer Robin, that's it in toto - nice small family.

Resident in Glen Waverley, we are owned by three cats - Boo (the twenty year old Patriarch of the tribe - alas, now becoming quite senile), Gingee  (Thugsley - a feline rock ape - a sentiment held by most and which Winter violently disagrees with!) and Flipper (Best described as Fluffnut") Unfortunately we lost little Kitley, an old spinster cat and Boo's adopted sister, to kidney failure last year... we all miss her dreadfully - she was "daddy's little girl". You can read more about these delightful little slave drivers and see their pictures here - just close the window to return to this page...

At 35 (ugh!), I am a computer Systems Engineer for Reynolds & Reynolds - a firm supplying Pick/UNIX integrated system solutions to the Australian car  industry.   My field of endeavour encompasses hardware certification, Implementation of various Unixes (AIX, SCO, AT&T), Local and Wide Area Networking & integration with dumb terminals & PCs (95 & NT)

Naturally, being a nerd by nature, we have our own "in-house" computer room, with Various PC's & a dedicated File, web and print server ('95 at present, LINUX in the wings as soon as I rebuild it & get Apache's FrontPage extensions running)

I was schooled at Pulteney Grammar, in Adelaide - a good enough school to teach me to THINK, not follow, copy and memorize like most. Whilst I have few fond memories of the place, I am grateful for the education - it has served me well.

I have been other things in my life - both a Chorister and "server at the Altar" at St Peters Cathedral in Adelaide, and an indentured  Watchmaker, both in Sydney and Melbourne. I ran a business selling and supporting computers ~10 years ago.

Despite my Anglican upbringing, I am an entrenched atheist, with a distaste of organised religion, no matter what flavour. I am not so arrogant as to pretend to know what "the truth, and my place in the Cosmos" is, unlike organised religion. If I were to have to put down my religion on a form, it would be Wiccan. I just hope I'm more tolerant than most Wiccans I've met.
This does not stop me from respecting individuals, even within organised Religion.  Indeed, the ones I most admire ARE   (or were) leaders in the Anglican community. I just take - or try to take - people on their merits.

My Adelaide hometown contingent are almost all lawyers - I don't hold that against them, however.

My pater, a Judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia, and my sister Melissa, Barrister at Law, are the legal-eagles of the clan.. Andrew Tokley, my brother in law, tries somewhat unsuccessfully to keep a check on my sister, and is Yet ANOTHER Barrister at Law!  Melissa is a workaholic though, so it's not an easy task!  A Briton, Andrew spent a lot of his early life in Hong Kong where his father was the Chief Customs Officer, but has lived in Australia for most of his adult life. Sporting a BA (Bachelor of Arts degree) and degree in Archaeology , both from Adelaide University  my mater somehow keeps the family in touch, talking to each other and cohesive.

Mike (My evil twin brother) forms the Israeli contingent of the family.  He works as an industrial engineer for Netafim - a leading-edge irrigation equipment manufacturer.  A Nerd like me, he spends most of his waking hours at the blunt end of a keyboard. He is married to Inbar, with whom he has three lively children - Sahar, Tom, and Kim. When Winter finally gets the "Perry Phamily Photo Album" online, you'll be able to see photos of them, too - watch for an announcement in The Red File soon!

That's about all for now. - check out The Red File for my general musings, technical ramblings, and rants and raves on current topics.
