| Toby Meres is an operator in Hunter's section. In a sense he is the antithesis
of Callan. Killing doesn't bother him; he enjoys it.
He is in his 20's, much younger than Callan, and from a wealthy public-school background., In dress, mannerisms and habits is a handsome Chelsea lay-about, but don't be fooled - he's a sadist. He hates Callan, and would do anything to usurp Callan's position. Perhaps it could be said that he did not respect the "age before beauty" custom - :) Rather than respect Callan's experience and discretion, he considers Callan to be "past it", and the he should move aside for younger blood. Callan mistrusts Meres, but is forced (sometimes by Hunter, sometimes by events) to use Meres and work with him. Meres makes no bones about his aspirations. When Callan becomes Hunter, Meres is recalled to fill Callan's shoes. The relationship between Callan and Meres becomes more estranged, as Meres now has to work UNDERNEATH Callan (The incumbent Hunter is not permitted into active field work - a rule Callan breaks on more than one occasion, particularly over the matter of Cross's suicide.) |
