Callan - The Series: Part IV - The Stories

You're Under Starters Orders

In the secret file registry used by the various Sections, the file clerk (Michael Hall) is putting away some CIA Liaison files when Callan strikes him from behind, knocking him out.  Callan then removes the files and runs off.  The loss of these secret documents makes it into the newspapers, and the angry Hunter informs Meres that Callan had been investigating a ‘pipeline’ for smuggling foreign agents and defectors out of the country. He fears that Callan may have joined it to make some money, and dispatches Meres to find him.

Callan is looking for a man known as ‘Theseus’, a name used by retired British agent Peter Strickland, but Strickland’s wife, Hannah (Kathleen Byron), tells him that her husband has left her, but directs him to a betting shop in Camden. CIA agent William Mannix (Warren Stanhope) sees Hunter, to whom he expresses his anger that so little seems to have been done to catch Callan. Meanwhile, Callan sees the manager of the betting shop, a man called Watt (Mark Kingston), who directs Callan one stage further, to Hampton Court.

While Callan searches the maze at Hampton Court, Meres and Mannix question Lonely as to Callan’s whereabouts, and soon learn where he is. Inside the maze, Callan encounters Nixon (Morris Perry), who hands him a catalogue, then leaves. There is a message in the catalogue directing Callan to Holland Park Adventure Playground. He sets off for Holland Park, followed by Mannix, who manages to trap him. This is witnessed by Watt and Nixon, who trick Mannix into handing Callan over.

When Mannix leaves them, Watt knocks Callan unconscious. He is taken to the Kingston Hotel, where he wakes to find both Watt and Nixon, and Hannah. Once they are satisfied he is genuine, they will allow him to carry on along the pipeline, at a cost of £5000. Callan tells them that he will only give the money to ‘Theseus’. Allowed to leave, Callan meets Hunter at his temporary accommodation above a book shop owned by Dennis Millet (Harold Innocent). He has been working for him all along, and tells his boss all he now knows, then asks for the necessary £5000, much to Hunter’s concern.

Meres knows nothing of the deception, and Mannix is convinced Callan is in the hands of the British authorities. However, Hunter now informs him that Callan has been working under cover, an unwise move as Mannix goes to tell Hannah, Nixon and Watt that Callan is a fake. It is Mannix who is ‘Theseus’.

All parties meet at the hotel where Callan is waiting to meet ‘Theseus’. Mannix breaks into Callan’s room via the fire escape, reveals his secret identity, then manages to force Callan out onto the fire escape, leading him up to the roof. Hunter and Meres follow, and while Callan keeps Mannix talking, Meres throws him a gun, which he uses to kill the American.

Hunter, cool as ever, asks Callan to return his £5000 in the morning.
