Callan - The Series: Part IV - The Stories

Goodness Burns Too Bright

German agent Bauer (Robert Lang) plans to plant a viable stooge in East Germany, then drop hints to the Russians that a British agent has been sent there.  If he is captured, it should make it easier to plant a real agent. Bauer suggests to Hunter that he send Callan.

Callan is being visited by an 'old flame', Eva Faber (Rosemary Frankau), who is in his own line of business, but in opposition to the British.  Hunter learns of this, and realises he can use Eva to draw Callan to Berlin.  This he does by having his assistant Maitland (Jeremy Lloyd) kidnap Eva with Lonely as a witness. When Callan learns of this, he goes to Berlin where he is ambushed at Eva's flat by Bauer's henchman, Franz (Les White).

In order to escape, Callan taunts Bauer over a past meeting, and a fight ensues in which Callan is injured, but manages to knock Bauer out, and make his escape.  He breaks into a doctor's surgery, where he encounters an elderly English woman who, it transpires, is the doctor, Dr. Schultz (Gladys Cooper), and learns that her late husband, Heindrich, was killed by the Russians in 1945.  She examines Callan and finds two broken ribs which she tapes up. The pain is too great, and Callan faints, giving the doctor the opportunity to take Callan's gun and empty it.

Bauer, meanwhile, has been phoning round all the doctors in the area, assuming Callan will have had to find one to attend his injuries.  Dr. Schultz is the last on his list, and when there is no answer, he goes round there, forcing his way in.

Callan has learned that Heindrich Schultz was an officer, and manages to find his old Luger pistol, containing two bullets.  With this he manages to take Bauer by surprise, and shoots him with both bullets.  The doctor is appalled at the killing, but Callan informs her that should she call the police, they won't be able to trace him: 'David Callan' does not exist.
